What we have here are not one but two versions of an
instrument called the Ovilus.
The Ovilus may actually be, from an electronic standpoint, the most complicated piece of equipment we use.
The Ovilus monitors most if not all of the environmental
conditions we might find useful (temperature, EM, humidity,
air pressure, etc.) and feeds them into a algorithm that
produces a number.
The number coincides with a very large dictionary internal
to the device and the device produces that word both on the
screen and audibly.
The GBPA uses two versions of the Ovilus. The Ovilus V (5), which is the newest version and pictured on the left above, and the Ovilus IV (4) on the right. While I can't offer an explanation, the older version, the Ovilus IV, is far more effective aboard Salem at any rate than the newer version.
