Another theory is that an entity attempting to manifest itself will cause an Electromagnetic Field disturbance.  This is an EMF detector.  It's used for the measurement of ambient (surrounding) electromagnetic fields.  The EMF meter is another piece of equipment, similar to the thermometer, which requires that thorough background readings be taken prior to use.
