A Fortean is an admirer and devotee of Charles Hoy Fort.
Fort was a write and researcher of a wide variety of phenomena considered to be anomalous.
These phenomena, along with the standard fare of ghosts and UFO’s, included Spontaneous human combustion, falls of frogs (as well as fish and unnatural objects too numerous to go into), unexplained disappearances, giant wheels of light in the ocean, alien abductions and a term Fort is often credited with coining, teleportation among many, many other things. One of which was a Super Sargasso Sea, into which all lost things disappear.
He was a prolific writer and I must say a guy I would really have liked.
When there was discussion about a formal group to study his writings and the phenomena on which they were based the self deprecating Fort thought it was a hilarious idea. He didn’t encourage it al all but was very obliging in terms of answering letters from admirers and fans.
When the Fortean Society was founded in 1931, unfortunately Fort’s health was really failing and he was never actually involved.
Charles Hoy Fort died, it is thought to be of leukemia, on May 3, 1932 in New York City.
