What we have here is a Parabolic Microphone.

  This microphone uses a parabolic reflector to focus sound
  waves into a transducer.

  It basically works the same way a satellite dish focuses
  radio waves (hence the resemblance).

  These microphones lack great sound fidelity, they're
  extremely sensitive to sounds coming from a single
  direction.

  This model can be used to listen real time and/or it can
  record for later review.
